The Carters are:
Tony: Named such because his parents thought the mafia was cool. He didn't, and became a political scientist. Somehow, he now is the formost expert on mob politics.
Collette: A mom figure who never grew up entirely, Collette has owned the happening place everywhere she has lived--she ran the hottest disco in college, the hottest club after, then a supremely hot coffee house, next a kick-ass juice bar, and now a jazz lounge. All the ritzy folk think of her as god. She'd rather kick up her feet, throw on some funk and knit a scarf.
Sam: Eldest of three, the introvert everyone knows and loves. Although he entertains desires of being a pop sensation (he's won best solo at national showchoir competitions 3 years running), or a basketball player, at core, he is nothing but a computer geek. He rarely talks having learned that his peers don't appreciate nerdy humor. Little does he know that he is destined for greatness...
Ben: The middle one, a very strange child. Into the same things as Sam, but a little wilder, a little more getting of the girls. Feels that his being must not really belong to his body, and often is inside of his head looking out, not really experiencing what's around him. When he does, everyone smiles, because it is something so awesomely strange they have to admire him.
Maddie: Ah, the little girl. For much of her life, Maddie inhabited the upstairs linen closet, even when offers were made to move into the attic (which she believes to be haunted). When Sam finally moves out, Maddie moves into his vacated room in the basement. Maddie is everything a girl wants to be: pretty, popular, cheerleaderlike smile without the aerosol overdose. Smart and stunning, she takes the leads in all the productions, but has strayed from the life of the average teenager. Something about IVs with alcohol in them disturbs her, and she'd rather just hang. Best friends with Laine, everyone wonders about them. How is it cool to hang out with losers 24/7?
